The Basics of Emissions Testing
You’ll be notified by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation when it’s time to have a vehicle emissions test. Remember to bring your WisDOT notice or license plate renewal notice to the test. An emissions test is required to renew your license plate (every couple of years) and when taking ownership of a vehicle. Racine County is one of seven counties in SE Wisconsin that requires emissions testing. Certain vehicles are exempt from emissions testing – that information and more can be found on the WisDOT Website.
Just moved to Wisconsin? Depending on the age of your vehicle, you may need an emissions test after registering your plates. New vehicles (model dated in the current year) have 3 years before inspection is required. If a vehicle fails an emissions inspection, the registration will be withheld and/or suspended if the noted issues are not resolved before re-testing.
