Who needs a test in Wisconsin?
Vehicles kept in these 7 SE Wisconsin counties require testing at registration renewal: Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Washington, Waukesha. - Your WisDOT/plate renewal notice (or your license plate number)
- A valid driver’s license (for ID)
- If this is a re-test, bring your previous Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR)

How often is testing required? At registration renewal, generally every two years for vehicles kept in the seven program counties.
Do you test on Saturdays? No. Emissions testing at our shop runs Mon–Fri 8–4.
I didn’t get a notice — can you still test my car? Yes. Bring your plate number (or VIN) and a photo ID; we’ll look it up.
My car failed. What happens next? We’ll give you your Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) and point you to the right next step. (Registration is held until the vehicle passes.) For repair requirements/exemptions, see WisDOT guidance.
Which vehicles are exempt? Some vehicles are exempt (for example, certain new model years and specific categories). Check the official WisDOT list for current rules.
