What is an Ignition Interlock Device?
Ignition interlock devices are designed to prevent drunk driving. A breathalyzer installed in your vehicle, interlock devices are attached to your ignition system. Before you can start your car or truck, you are required to blow into the built-in mouthpiece. A handheld unit then measures your Breath Alcohol Concentration (BrAC) and if your BrAC is below the legal limit, you can start your car and proceed as normal. A BrAC above the legal limit will stop your vehicle from starting.
Ignition interlock devices are easy to use and a safe way to prevent drinking and driving.
When is it Required?
An ignition interlock device is required in Wisconsin after OWI Convictions; most common on second and subsequent OWI offenses. If you’re suspected of drinking and driving and you refuse a breathalyzer test, you’ll likely be required to install an interlock device in your vehicle as well.
