AUTO MAINTENANCE FAQ

You rely on your vehicle to get you almost everywhere you need to go. It is important to keep your vehicle in good condition. These are some common questions many people have when it comes to maintenance and servicing your vehicle. If you don’t see your question or concern, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

What are the most important things to keep up with for auto maintenance of my car?

There are certain things that must have routine maintenance in order for your vehicle to perform optimally and long term. These include:

  • Filter and Oil Change
  • Tire Rotation
  • Brake Inspection
  • Full vehicle inspection
  • Battery Check

How often should I get my oil changed?

This is dependent on the type of vehicle you drive.
Newer vehicles that use synthetic oil can go 7,500 miles between oil changes. Older vehicles that still use conventional oil, however, can only go about 3,000 miles between oil changes. If you drive very little and your vehicle sits for long periods of time, you should still get your oil changed at least twice a year. For many vehicle owners, it is best to get an oil change at 6,000 miles and to have your tires rotated at the same time.

How do I check the oil level in my car?

This is something fairly easy to do. First, make sure you are safely parked on a level ground and then open the hood of your vehicle. Locate the dipstick likely labeled “OIL” and a bright easy to spot color. Pull this dipstick out and clean with a rag or paper towel. Then place the dipstick back where you found it all the way in. Pull it out again, keeping the oily side down. Look at the markers towards the bottom of the dipstick (these will either be 2 lines or holes to mark the oil level. If the oil level falls between these markers, you are good to go. If the line is below the marks or you do not see oil on the dipstick, you need to add motor oil to your vehicle.

Why is my check engine light on?

The check engine light could signal a number of issues, ranging from minor to serious. Most often, a check engine light could mean you have a loose gas cap, a failing oxygen sensor, or an engine problem. It doesn’t mean you need to stop your vehicle immediately, it just means you need to have your vehicle serviced soon.

When should I replace my tires?

The tread on your tires is the best indicator for replacement. An easy way to check tire tread is to place a penny (head down) into the tread grooves. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, the tread has worn down too much and you need tire replacement.

If you have your tires rotated regularly, and there are no balance or alignment issues, you can expect your tires to last much longer. Which is a great benefit when you consider the cost of tire replacement. Eventually, even with proper maintenance, you will have to replace your tires.

How long do windshield wiper blades last?

Midwest living! Living in Wisconsin, you will likely have to change your wiper blades twice a year. One time before winter begins, and again in the spring. When you notice your wipers are starting to smear water on your windshield obstructing your view vs. wiping it completely away and helping you see better – it’s time for new wipers.

What are the warning signs of brake issues?

The most obvious indicator is if the dashboard brake light is on. But other signs include a soft brake pedal (you have to push it all the way down to get your vehicle to slow or stop), you hear a squealing or grinding sound especially when you press the brake pedal, you feel a wobbling or vibration while braking, or your vehicle begins to pull to one side when you brake.

If you notice any of these issues or other issues with your vehicle, contact Wisco Automotive sooner than later. Most issues with your vehicle only get worse or affect more parts to your car if you wait too long.
